LOCAL MAN KILLED INSTANTLY
AS VAN CRUSHED BY LUMBER
PAKENHAM TRAGEDY
A 24-year-old Carleton Place area man was killed instantly when a load of lumber came crashing
down on the van he was driving at Pakenham on Friday.
Robert Brydges of R.R. 1 Carleton Place lost his life as a result of the 11:25 a.m. accident which
occurred on Highway 29, near the north limits of Pakenham.
It was Brydges' 23rd day on the job as a driver for Hudson Bay Wholesale Limited, stationed in
Carleton Place.
According to the company's manager Dawson MacDowall, Brydges had started working for the
wholesale company January 2.
"His regular route was to Almonte, Pakenham and Arnprior," MacDowall explained. "He had
taken the run usually serviced by Jack Hurdis."
Robert had two-thirds of his delivery done when the accident occurred, MacDowall added.
According to the Perth detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, Brydges was northbound when
the mishap took place.
The Brydges vehicle was met by a tractor-trailer carrying a load of lumber and as it rounded a sharp
curve the load shifted, came off the trailer, and crushed the van, killing Brydges instantly,
according to the OPP.
The tractor-trailer was driven by stephen Clark of Dubois, Pennsylvania. He was travelling in tandem
with another tractor-trailer owned by Butler Trucking Company Limited, of Woodland Pennsylvania.
Clark was uninjured.
The Perth OPP said Clark was approximately half a mile ahead of his counterpart. Both transports
were coming from Gilies Lumber Company in Braeside, just northwest of Arnprior, and were headed
home.
Brydges had finished his Pakenham deliveries and was headed for Arnprior. He had completed his
rounds at both of the village's restaurants, and the news of his death came as a great shock to
those who had spoken to him minutes earlier.
His first stop had been Centennial Restaurant, where he had made is delivery a few minutes earlier
than usual.
"He may have been a little earlier than normal," Marian Barr, a member of the restaurant staff said,
"I signed the sheet for him and he left."
Brydges' next stop was Chenier's D and V Restaurant.
"He was here, and made his delivery, but when I wanted to pay him he asked me to wait until the
salesman arrived," Doug Chenier said. He (Brydges) said he was in a hurry, he didn't say why, but
I guess everyone likes to finish their work as early as possible on Fridays."
The restaurant owner described Brydges as a very nice lad, who had only been on the job a little
while.
After his delivery he headed for the curve, approximately a quarter of a mile from the restaurant.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was charged by OPP Constable Paul Grinton with careless driving,
failing to share the roadway, and carrying an insecure load.
Clark will appear in provincial court in Perth February 22.
Robert was the son of Bob and Joyce Brydges of Innisville. He is survived by his brother Ronald
and his sisters Sheryl and Shelley.
His funeral was held Monday at St. John's Anglican Church in Innisville. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery.
