JAMES AND SARAH HEADRICK.
Excerpt from White Lake-The history of an original Settler Family by Marion Headrick
James and Sarah Headrick were married in Scotland 1808 at about 20 and 16 years of age; coming to Canada in 1821 with 6 children, ranging in age from 11 years to a babe in arms.   In Canada their family was increased by five and in time
the ten marriages gave some ninety grandchildren, although several died young with the all too prevalent diseases of
pneumonia, diphtheria and tuberculosis.   Descendents now to the 6th and 7th generations are too numerous to count.

As to his occupation, James Headrick may have been one of the many weavers in the early 1800's, either in mills or in
cottages.   In this time of depression following the Napoleonic wars, the weavers were especially hard hit as demand for
cloth fell.   Societies were set up in Glasgow and area for the member heads of families to consider resettlement.  The
Headrick family embarked on the "George Canning"- which sailed "with the morning tide" April 14. 1821.   There were
490 recorded passengers not including crew.   No furniture was taken, but small household articles were allowed and
pots were needed for cooking and their own provisions en voyage.   Also, of course they brought clothing and were
advised to take yarn and mitts en route.   Anchor was dropped at Quebec City on June 1; surely everyone was happy to
go ashore.   Archie, the babe-in-arms, lived to be 98 years, so must not have suffered too much.   But at Quecec. they
were a long way from Lanark.

The emigrants were taken by steamship to Montreal and rhere to Lachine where they boarded bateaux (flat-bottom boats)
each of which would carry about three families with their luggage.   In about a week they reached Prescott where they
camped as long as two weeks until all the ship's passengers had assembled.   Then came a five day trip over poor trails.
Often "they slept under the stars" and there were illnesses, even fatalities.   Finally, travelling on foot (women and small
children riding on wagons at times) they reached Perth and after a brief stop there, it was on to the new village of Lanark,
the site of the office for settling the local newcomers.

Supplies were given out to the settlers-bedding, building articles, implements and seed, including potatoes.   Also money
with certain restrictions.   Usually the settlers made a one-roomed shanty for immediate use followed by a log house of
better construction.   Available lots were usually marked by two stakes, and men had a choice of two.   But these men
were straight from the city of Glasgow, weary with travel, faced with heavily treed land, perhaps boggy.   It was difficult to
make a good choice.   James Jeadrick chose 100 acres, about three miles from Lanark Village on the road to Middleville.
However, because it was covered with trees, you could know that this part of the Canadian Shield in Lanark was not good
agricultural land?

Pioneer life was much the same all over the Ottawa Valley- clearing land, the young men going to the shanty, or working
for the Colonel By on the Rideau Canal, or giving up and moving on    Deeds were withheld until moneys were repaid in full
for ship's passage had to be repaid within 10 years.   A generous enough arrangement had the land been more productive.
However so many settlers found their land to be of such poor quality that it was not possicle to repay these debts through
farming.   In April of 1831, a petition was delivered to the Government requesting that they be released from their debts.
In December of 1834 a surveyor was sent to examine the farmlands. He (Mr. C. Rankin) reported that they were generally
unproductive.   The Headrick farn was dismissed as "Good for nothing, rocky". A second lot near Rosetta also proved unsuitable.

Finally, during the last days of Chief McNab, the Headrick family moved tp Pakenham Tpwnship, near the village of White
Lake.   The 1852 census shows that of the 200 acres, 80 acres were under cultivation; 2 acres in garden; 2 in wheat; 5 in
barley; 2 in potatoes; 1 in turnips and 10 in hay.   Stock consisted of 4 milk cows(this was winter); 7 calves; 2 horses;
12 sheep and 8 pigs.   On hand were 4 barrels of porkand produced during the past year were 300 lbs of butter and 100 lbs of cheese.

James Headrick died December 8th 1866. a full 90 years.   Sarah, it seens, died at an earlier date.   Any White lake early
marker in the cemetery at White Lake has long since deteriorated and cemetary records for that period are not available
from the White Lake church of which he was so long an Elder.   A well-deserved rest, for the young couple who had come
to Lanark, Canada, so many years cefore.
